The period 1850-1900 witnessed the most far reaching changes sporting gun and rifle design had ever experienced. Prior to this, changes had been pedestrian, the muzzle-loader still ruled the day in 1850 as it had done for previous centuries.

In Great Britain, the continental inspired breech-loader appeared on the scene in the early 1850’s and by around 1860, the pinfire breech-loader had ousted the muzzle-loader. Thereafter, in pursuit of perfection, gunmakers constantly strove to improve every aspect of the breech-loader introducing the centre-fire, snap actions, hammerless designs, ejector mechanisms and single triggers, to the extent that the hammerless ejector of 1900 bore little resemblance to the muzzle-loader of 1850.

Similarly with rifles, development proceeded apace, the two-groove muzzle-loading Express rifle of 1850 being rapidly superseded by the multi-groove, breech-loading rifle of smaller calibre with higher velocity and greater power, propelled by nitro powder and with many different mechanisms on offer.

Donald Dallas has produced a detailed account of the many changes that occurred in this period. He describes at length the pinfire, centre-fire and hammerless developments along with all the ancillary changes. In addition, eight appendices that contain much contemporary material never published before, are included to give an added flavour to the era. The text is complemented by over 600 photographs.
